Explanation

Record mode

NO RECORD
REALTIME
EVENT
NO RECORD is as the name suggests, the DVR won't record the footage for the selected channel (useful if you don't have a camera connected to the selected channel)
REALTIME will record everything as long as the DVR is turned on.
EVENT This is where the Schedule comes in to play below, if at the current time it is set to Timer, the DVR will record everything thats happening (same as REALTIME mode). If the current time is set to Alarm, then the DVR will only record when an alarm is active.
File length

3 MIN
5 MIN
10 MIN
.
.
60 MIN
This is the length of each recorded file. It's recommended to have this set to a lower value so it's easier to sort through the footage.

This works in both REALTIME and EVENT recording.
Prerecord

NO
5s
10s
15s
This is the time before the alarm goes off that the DVR will record for, so if an alarm happens at 10:00:00, the DVR can record everything that happened from as early as 09:59:45.

This works in both REALTIME and EVENT recording.
Event REC time

30s
60s
.
.
330s
This is the time after the alarm goes off that the DVR will record for, so if an alarm happens at 10:00:00, the DVR can record everything that happens up to 10:05:30.

This works in both REALTIME and EVENT recording.
PIR

This will enable or disable the ability to have a Passive Infra Red sensor connected to an alarm input to only record when movement is detected. There is a relatively complex prosess to set this up, it is explained in depth here (not linked yet).
Schedule

Timer
Alarm
If the Record mode above is set to EVENT then this timeline comes in to play. At all times it is set to Timer, the DVR will be recording everything (the same as if Record mode was set to REALTIME), but when it is set to Alarm, the DVR will only record when an alarm is active for whatever reason.
